[Extensile on CAAD Blog](http://www.caad.arch.ethz.ch/blog/extensile-robotic-workshop/)
-->

Extensile was the result of a two-week robotic fabrication workshop module taught in the postgraduate programme (MAS CAAD) of the Chair for Computer Aided Architectural Design (CAAD), ETH Zurich, by Achilleas Xydis, Mariana Popescu and Constantinos Miltiadis, in May-June 2015.

The aim of the module was to introduce robotic fabrication through experimental production methods.
Therefore, we proposed a fabrication method that was neither subtractive nor additive, but rather ‘formative’.
The course explored the use of thermoplastic materials –polymers that become pliable above a specific temperature and solidify again when cooled down.
For this, we created a setup where the thermoplastic sheet was fixed on a wooden frame mounted on the robot.
A heat gun and a formative tool-tip were arranged in adjacent stations on the floor.
The fabrication workflow had the robot moving the polymer sheet on top of the heat gun, where it was locally heated for a specific amount of time, and then moved over and pushed down the tool-tip, which like a mold, deformed a pliable area of the polymer sheet.

The course began with a series of tests to explore the behavior and tolerances of the mater against various parameters of head-induced deformation.
The process generated a data set that described the tolerances of the material in regard to various tool tips, the height, angle and density of deformations, and the amount of heating required.
This study informed the creation of parametric tools that assisted the material-specific design process and the automation of the fabrication process.
In conjunction with the use of a 7-axis Kuka robot, this allowed us to design and fabricate with a high degree of controlled variation at the threshold of the material’s tolerances.

The course participants developed a panel-based construction consisting of 32 40×40 cm modules arranged in a 4x8 grid.
The patterned surfaces were designed using a coplex system of probabilistic distributions developed in Wolfram Mathematica and Grasshopper.
Lastly, the robot control code was generated using the KUKA|prc Grasshopper plug-in.

Extensile was presented at the Chair for Computer Aided Architectural Design on 11.06.2015

The garden is conceived as the Queen’s antidote to boredom, a playground open to stimuli for subverting the normality of everyday life, and a gateway to the fantastic and phantasmic.
Wearing an electronic suit, the Queen escapes to the garden to explore its wonders.
Its physical dimension is a space –any generic space– tracked by infrared sensors and populated by machinery.
Its virtual counterpart, however, is a live phantom that transforms continuously to reflect the Queen’s desires while she strolls the generic space.

Wearable suit with 20 LEDs, a speaker, and an Arduino microcontroller with an XBEE wireless module

Instead of inventing a new architectural language based on shifts in technology, this projects searches for an integrative approach towards traditional crafts and archetypal forms. Using digital design tools, traditional timber joints were adapted to be usable with raw, irregular logs. These joints have subsequently been produced using a chainsaw mounted on an industrial robot. All movements for the robot were planned digitally, with students preparing the exact toolpaths for each log type.

Here, the notion of double articulation is applied to the book chapter itself by exploring computationally the correlations between its linguistic expression and the stratification of its textual substance.
As a video essay on the ‘quantification of writing’, the text of the chapter was analyzed computationally to infer abstract relations and densities between text atoms, and was then rendered into indexes, dimensions, colors, and shapes.

is seen as the interaction, on a meta-level, between the lecture of Professor Challenger as expression and the actual concept of strata and stratification as substance. As an essay on the “quantification of writing” therefore, the corpus of the chapter was abstracted to text and analyzed in abstract relations and densities of occurrences from which each word would receive dimensions, which can eventually be rendered or transposed to numbers, colors and shapes.
“The geology of The Geology of Morals” is an abstract constructive take on the concept of *double articulation* introduced in the chapter “The Geology of Morals” from the book “One thousand Plateaus” of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari (2013 [1984)].
Double articulation, the interplay between form and substance of expression on one hand, and form and substance of content on the other, here is applied to the book chapter itself as the interaction between the linguistic content of the lecture of Professor Challenger (expression), and actual concept of stratification (substance).

Porocity is a collaborative procedural design project implementing shape grammars in Processing.
Produced by the 2013 MAS CAAD class at the Chair for Digital Architectonics (née Chair for CAAD), during a programming course taught by Benjamin Dillenburger.
